The search for Charlie Kirk’s shooter continues. Officials say, ‘We need as much help as we can possibly get.’

Orem • Nearly 32 hours after a gunman fatally shot political pundit Charlie Kirk on Utah Valley University’s campus, local, state and federal law enforcement have taken two people into custody, received thousands of tips and conducted nearly 200 interviews — but the shooter remains on the loose, they announced Thursday evening.

They are now re-upping calls for the public to assist in the investigation, saying the tips are pushing their search forward.

“We need as much help as we can possibly get,” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said at a news conference Thursday night.

Police have now released six photos of a person they consider a person of interest in the shooting.

The new, enhanced pictures show more clearly the suspected shooters’ clothing, revealing an American flag and eagle on his shirt, as well as a triangle emblem on his hat and his Converse tennis shoes — “all identifying features that we’re hoping the public can help us identify and lead us to this suspect,” Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said.

On Thursday night, authorities also released a video showing the suspect jumping off the roof of the Losee Center and flee the Orem campus.

Cox said the release was meant to get “as much attention as possible, so that we can get help from the public in tracking down this evil human being.”

Even as the shooter has been on the loose for more than a day, Cox said he was confident authorities would eventually find him. “We are going to catch this person,” he said.

Cox added that authorities are already preparing the necessary paperwork to pursue the death penalty when an arrest is made.

FBI Director Kash Patel arrived in Utah on Thursday and toured the crime scene. He attended the evening news conference but made no comment.

While the shooting suspect has not been found, other details in the high-profile killing began to emerge Thursday.

Investigators had recovered a weapon — a bolt-action rifle — from a wooded area, authorities said.

Officers were still combing a residential neighborhood on the northern edge of campus Thursday afternoon, talking with residents and trying to access footage from security cameras on homes.

Investigators have not identified the shooter or determined a motive, but they have shared images of the suspected individual’s face. The FBI’s Salt Lake City office released the photos on the social media site X, calling the man a “person of interest.”

(FBI) The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Salt Lake City office released images of someone they describe as a person of interest in the shooting death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025.

The images show a man in a black T-shirt, blue jeans, gray hat and black sunglasses. A second set of photographs released later in the day show the man wearing gray sneakers and a black backpack. Authorities described him as “college-age.”

“I understand there are a lot of questions about motive,” said Robert Bohls, FBI special agent in charge of the agency’s Salt Lake City office. “I assure you that all leads and tips are being fully investigated.”

Cox said police have received nearly 7,000 tips related to the investigation. Cox said that was the most “digital tips” the FBI had received related to a case since the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.

On Thursday morning, the FBI posted on its main X account that it was offering a reward of up to $100,000 for “information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual(s) responsible for the murder of Charlie Kirk” in Orem.

Kirk, 31, was participating in a speaking event on campus when he was shot at about 12:20 p.m.

The shooter arrived at the event at 11:52 a.m., used stairwells to access the top of a campus building, then fled into a neighborhood after firing a round, authorities said.

Authorities say investigators are trying to trace the weapon and collect fingerprints and DNA. The FBI said it does have impressions of the shooter’s footwear, palms and forearms.

“The FBI’s mission is protect the American people,” Bohls said. “It’s to help uphold the Constitution of the United States. Any attack on the First Amendment is an attack on the very foundation of our democracy.”

Bohls encouraged anyone with tips to share them with the FBI via its website or by phone at 1-800-225-5324.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Law enforcement comb the neighborhood near Utah Valley University in search for evidence the day after the shooting of Charlie Kirk at the school, Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025.

Two people were taken into custody shortly after the shooting, but the Utah Department of Public Safety ultimately found there were “no current ties to the shooting with either” of the individuals.

Orem police said they arrested a man who entered the crime scene at UVU on Thursday morning and took photos and videos. Police said the arrest was “unrelated” to the shooting investigation. The 38-year-old Pleasant Grove man was booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of trespassing and obstruction of justice, according to court documents.

On Thursday night, Cox also acknowledged a “tremendous amount of misinformation” circulating online, and blamed the torrent on bots from China and Russia.

“Our adversaries want violence,” he said.

Cox encouraged people to step away from their phones and social media, something he said Kirk advocated for “when things get bad.”
