The worst of the construction on 2100 South is winding down in Sugar House, but now one of the area’s main tethers to Millcreek is getting an upgrade.
This month, crews are repaving 1300 East between 2100 South and Elgin Avenue. Construction is currently focused on the section between 2100 South and Interstate 80, and repavement is planned for the area between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. through the next two weeks.
The city plans to keep all lanes of 1300 East between 2100 South and I-80 open during the day, but some lanes may be closed overnight, 1300 East project manager Alex Drake said.
Late this week, crews plan to focus on the section of 1300 East between I-80 and Elgin Avenue, deputy city engineer Josh Willie added. That area will also be repaved overnight, so most lanes should be open during the day, Willie said.

Once construction is complete, the entire project area between 1300 East and Elgin Avenue will be lined with a “highly modified asphalt mix,” Willie said, which the Utah Department of Transportation developed to create stronger roads.
This means drivers will experience fewer potholes and a longer-lasting road. Construction will be quicker as well, since this asphalt doesn’t require much work to the road’s foundation, Willie added.
In addition to the high-tech asphalt, the upgraded 1300 East will feature improved pedestrian crosswalks and dedicated cyclist crossings at Stratford and Wilmington avenues. Landscaped median islands will be added across from Sugar House Park and between 2700 South and Parkway Avenue, Willie said.
The project is planned to wrap up sometime between mid-October and early November, Willie added. The city will post construction updates on its project website, 1300eastslc.com.
“We recognize the pain that roadway construction always is,” Willie said. “We do as much as we can to decrease the impacts that the construction itself has on communities, but we’re also appreciative of the patience that the community has with us as we’re going through that necessary pain, but [we’re] excited about the improvements that we’re making with these roadway projects.”
