A townhome fire, the fourth structure fire in Ogden this month, has left two residents displaced, according to the city’s fire department.
Red Cross has been contacted to help the two residents, according to a news release from the fire department.
Fire crews were dispatched to the fire on the 700 North block of Washington Blvd. around 10:17 p.m. Tuesday, the release said. Crews found the fire had “consumed a large portion of the middle townhome” of the building. Three apartments were affected, fire officials said.
Crews were able to extinguish the flames within 10 minutes, the news release said. Still, the fire caused an estimated $600,000 of damage. Fire crews stayed for three hours, Ogden Fire Chief Mike Slater said in a statement Tuesday afternoon, helping residents and investigators.
The cause of the fire, Slater said, was “improper disposal of smoking material” outside the building.
The structure fire is the fourth reported in Ogden so far in August.
• On Aug. 3, the department said an unoccupied town home at 400 West on 12th Street caught fire, causing an estimated $1.6 million in damage.
• On Aug. 4, a fire damaged a multilevel apartment building on the 300 block of 32nd Street, displacing 13 residents.
• On Aug. 8, a three-story apartment building still under construction was destroyed at the 100 block of 18th Street.
After the Aug. 8 blaze, Slater said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the federal agency responsible for investigating arson cases, was trying to help determine the cause.
The Ogden Fire Marshal’s Office handled the investigation of Tuesday’s fire, the department said. Slater said ATF was not involved in that investigation.
