Utah’s municipal primary election is Tuesday. Here’s what to know and where to vote.

Utahns across the state are voting for the mayoral and city council candidates they want to see on the ballot in November.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) A voter deposits his ballot in the drop box at Salt Lake County Government Center in 2024. Utahns will vote in the municipal primary on Aug. 12 to decide which mayoral, city council and school board candidates they'd like to see on the ballot in November.

It’s primary day in Utah, and residents from Logan to Sandy to St. George will cast their ballots to decide which mayoral, city council and school board candidates will head to the general election in November.

Not all cities will have a primary. Because Salt Lake City is using ranked choice voting this year, candidates in the four council races in Utah’s capital will automatically move to November ballots. Other cities, meanwhile, may not have enough candidates in a given race to warrant a primary.

Here’s what else you need to know:

How can I vote?

Utahns with a municipal primary should have received a ballot in the mail. It’s too late to mail in a ballot — a law passed in the 2025 legislative session requires ballots to be in the county clerk’s possession by 8 p.m. on election days. Previously, mail-in ballots were counted as long as they were postmarked by the day before an election.

If residents haven’t mailed their ballot already, they still can submit them through their county’s ballot drop boxes. Utahns can also cast their votes at their county’s vote centers. Valid identification is required to vote in person. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Those in line at vote centers by 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Where can I vote?

In Salt Lake County, 28 drop boxes are available and 12 in-person vote centers will be open. Voters can drop a ballot at any drop box or cast a ballot at any vote center.

A list of drop box locations and vote centers can be found at votesearch.utah.gov.

What do I need to bring if I plan to vote in person?

Utah voters who plan to vote in person must provide a valid form of ID. A valid Utah driver license or U.S. passport are acceptable forms of photo ID. Tribal identification cards, which may not include a photograph, are also acceptable.

If voters do not have a current photo ID or tribal identification card, they can also provide two forms of other identification. These documents must include the name and address of the resident, such as a current utility bill or a current vehicle registration.

A comprehensive list of identification documents that can be presented at polling locations can be found at votesearch.utah.gov.

Can I still register to vote?

Yes. Residents can register to vote at a polling location on primary election day, but they must bring a valid ID card or two forms of nonphoto ID that contain the resident’s name and address, such as a current utility bill or vehicle registration.

When will results be posted?

The Salt Lake Tribune will post early, unofficial returns as soon as they are made available after polls close at 8 p.m. Check sltrib.com for the latest results.
