Fire crews battled a wildfire that broke out early Monday on the east side of Tibble Fork Reservoir in American Fork Canyon, prompting evacuations and road closures in the area, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

As of Monday morning, the fire had burned roughly a quarter of an acre, said Kathy Pollock, public information officer for the Forest Service.

A spokesperson for the Utah County Sheriff’s department said the fire was contained from spreading by 10 a.m. Monday.

The Lone Peak Fire Department, in a post on X Monday afternoon, said forest service personnel were handling the fire, and local fire crews had been released.

The fire was on a steep grade, only accessible by foot or air, Pollock said.

“It’s about a third of the slope, so crews have to hike in,” Pollock said. “The helicopter’s flying with buckets. It takes a little bit.”

Pollock said that on Monday morning, three fire engines and one helicopter were working to suppress the flames.

As a safety precaution, the Granite Flat Campground, Tibble Fork summer home area and Tibble Fork Reservoir were evacuated, Pollock said — and the Tibble Fork Reservoir area was closed to the public Monday morning.

“The Forest Service was hopeful to be able to re-open the area for tomorrow,” the Utah County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, state Route 144 at the Alpine Loop was closed due to a fire affecting the roadway, the agency posted on X. The road was still closed as of noon Monday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Pollock said.
