Viral video of purported ICE raid in West Jordan showed a different federal agency

The U.S. Marshals Service carried out a homicide arrest warrant in West Jordan on Thursday evening during an operation captured in a viral video.

A video widely circulated online over the weekend purported to show an immigration enforcement raid in West Jordan, but both the city and agency behind the operation said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had no involvement.

The footage, viewed more than 4 million times on X, formerly Twitter, showed multiple officers walking down a residential street, some carrying long guns. “This is ICE walking down my street,” a woman says in the background.

But the viral video depicted agents with the U.S. Marshals Service, not ICE, officials with West Jordan and the U.S. Marshals said.

The federal agency was serving an arrest warrant in a homicide case, spokesperson Mark Thomson said. He declined to share further details about the target of the operation or the related investigation.

Officers who participated in the Thursday evening swarm were part of a unit focused on apprehending violent fugitives. Given the work of often approaching people who could be armed and dangerous, the team usually includes 15 to 20 agents, Thomson said.

West Jordan spokesperson Marie Magers said the municipality sometimes works with the U.S. Marshals but was not involved in this case.

“This incident is not related to immigration enforcement,” she said in a statement, “and the city of West Jordan is not involved in any immigration actions.”
