Fire crews put out grass fire near Ensign Peak trailhead

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes; crews work to douse hotspots ahead of approaching storm.

(Salt Lake City Fire Department) Crews from the Salt Lake City Fire Department mop up the remnants of a small grass fire near the Ensign Peak trailhead on July 2, 2025.

Fire crews extinguished a grass fire that broke out near the Ensign Peak trailhead Wednesday afternoon, according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

Firefighters contained the blaze in about 30 minutes, and started working to extinguish lingering hotspots before an incoming storm arrived, said Capt. Chad Jepperson of SLCFD.

“Fortunately, weather conditions have cooled down a little bit, and it wasn’t as fast-moving as it could have been,” Jepperson said.

Ensign Vista Drive was scheduled to remain closed for about an hour, Jepperson said. Salt Lake City police assisted to manage the closure, he said.

Crews responded to the fire at around 4 p.m., Jepperson said.

A few hikers evacuated from the area on their own, but a full evacuation of the hillside wasn’t necessary because of the quick response, he said, and because there were only a few people in the area.

No major structures were damaged, Jepperson said, adding that only a portion of fencing near the trailhead sustained damage.
