Police in Taylorsville on Monday released the name of a man who was shot and killed by officers there over the weekend.
On Sunday, a caller reported a domestic violence situation at a home near 3900 W. 5800 South, according to a news release.
When police arrived, they encountered Foueti Afeaki, 33, in the garage of the home around 11 a.m., the release stated.
While the officers were talking with Afeaki, he “produced a handgun,” the release said, and three Taylorsville officers opened fire. It’s unclear whether Afeaki fired the handgun.
Afeaki was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and he later died, the release stated.
The OICI (Officer Involved Critical Incident) protocol was put into effect, and the Unified Police Department will be handling the investigation.
The three officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave, as is customary in a police shooting while the investigation is conducted, the release said.
