The death is under investigation.

(Utah Department of Corrections) A parolee at the Fortitude Treatment Center died of an apparent overdose.

A parolee died on Sunday of a suspected overdose he suffered at a treatment center operated by the Utah Department of Corrections.

The department is investigating the death of Michael Campbell in what “initially appears to be an overdose,” according to a news release. Campbell was found “unresponsive” at the Fortitude Treatment Center at 1747 S. 900 West, and staff members there attempted to revive him. He died while he was being transported to a hospital.

The facility was placed on lockdown while the department’s Law Enforcement Bureau investigated the death.

The Fortitude Treatment Center is one of five residential community correctional and treatment centers in Utah for individuals who have recently been paroled from prison. According to the Department of Corrections, the centers are “designed to help individuals who may not have a place to go when they leave prison, need additional treatment as they transition back into the community, or as an intervention placement for those already on parole in the community.”

The department provided no additional information about Campbell.
