Roy police fatally shot reportedly suicidal man

Officers shot at the man after he “presented a firearm in a threatening manner,” authorities said in a news release.

Roy police officers fatally shot a man who was reported as suicidal on Friday night, a department spokesperson said Saturday.

Officers responded to a report of a 39-year-old man threatening suicide at the Orchard Cove Apartment Complex at 1801 W 4650 S, authorities said in a news release. Police evacuated the building since the man was armed and “presenting a significant threat to the general public and officers on scene.”

Police attempted to negotiate with the man for about three hours, according to a news release. At some point, the man “presented a firearm in a threatening manner,” and two officers fired their weapons.

The man was later pronounced dead at the scene, a spokesperson said. Authorities didn’t specify how many shots were fired or if the man fired his weapon.

The Weber County Attorney’s office is investigating the shooting, authorities said in the release. The shooting marked the 13th police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
