Days after the Ogden River washed away part of the road through Ogden Canyon, repairs have been completed, traffic through the area is back to normal — and the Ogden Marathon will proceed as planned along State Road 39 on Saturday.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, State Road 39 is fully open to traffic in both directions. On Thursday, the river eroded a section of banking beneath the road, causing the shoulder and part of a travel lane to collapse. The inside lane was reopened on Friday, and road crews allowed traffic to pass through one way at a time.
Since then, crews have worked to repair the damage. And, according to organizers of the Ogden Marathon, because repairs are complete, there will be no changes to the planned route of Saturday’s race.
Organizers did warn that those running the full marathon will be restricted to running on the westbound shoulder of State Road 39 for “a few hundred yards” at mile marker 24 — about 3 miles into the course — because of “additional flooding” in the area. Police will be in the area to direct runners, who are asked to be “vigilant, and remain to the right of the cones at all times.”
Saturday’s events include the marathon, half-marathon, relay, 12K and 5K races, according to the Ogden Marathon website.
On Saturday, State Road 39 will be closed through Ogden Canyon from 5:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. because of the marathon. Canyon residents can use a Utah Highway Patrol shuttle to travel to and from their homes during that time.
In addition, State Route 158 will be closed between the spillway and the Valley Market in the Ogden Valley during the race. Residents of Eden, Huntsville, and Liberty are asked to use Trappers Loop or the North Ogden Divide. Traffic is expected to return to normal by 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
