A teenage girl was shot and killed by her brother Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Authorities responded to a report of a shooting in the 1600 block of West Wright Circle at about 12:04 p.m. on Wednesday. First responders found a teenage girl who had been shot inside a home, but she died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts, officials said in a news release.

The shooter — later identified as the girl’s brother, according to a tweet from Salt Lake City Police — left the home before officers arrived, police said. The girl’s brother, who is under the age of 18, was later found on a Utah Transit Authority bus near 1455 West 400 South.

While searching for the shooter, Edison Elementary, Parkview Elementary and Glendale Middle School were placed on Secure Alert, meaning all exterior doors were locked and no one was allowed to enter or leave the school buildings, according to Fox 13 News.

Authorities did not release information on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police will release an update once the shooter is booked into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center.
