The West Quarter, next to the Utah Jazz arena, will further bolster a burgeoning nightlife.

Another upscale addition to the heart of Salt Lake City officially opened Wednesday with luxury apartments, two hotels, several new restaurants and a key pedestrian plaza meant to feed downtown’s growing nightlife.

The West Quarter — at the southwest corner of 100 South and 300 West, kitty-corner from the soon-to-be-renamed Utah Jazz arena — is a mixed-use development spread over two 11-story buildings around a midblock plaza and east-west walkway dubbed Quarter Row.

Backers say the swanky and well-appointed complex is intended as a centrally located urban hub luring patrons of downtown attractions and an emerging cluster of entertainment destinations just west of the city’s core.

The project’s completion, according to developer Ryan Ritchie of The Ritchie Group, one of its main partners, marks a milestone in fleshing out food, beverage and retail outlets for those taking in an expanding roster of downtown events.

“We’ve been talking about it locally for 20-plus years,” Ritchie said of a city entertainment district, “and now you’re seeing it come to fruition.”

Garn Development, based in Layton, is also a top partner in the development. Jacobsen Construction, based in Salt Lake City, was the main contractor.

A new residential and hospitality center known as West Quarter, located at 100 South and 300 West in Salt Lake City, opened on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. It includes 240 luxury apartments in a tower called The Charles and 272 guest rooms spread over two hotels, Le Meridien and Element, along with several restaurants and soon-to-be opened retail outlets at ground level.

The West Quarter name plays off the Jazz’s history in New Orleans before coming to Utah, Ritchie said, and common areas throughout the two towers have splashy and stylish musical themes in their lobby and common area decor, often displayed with commissioned art pieces.

Salt Lake City Council member Ana Valdemoros welcomed the new addition as the urban nucleus continues to grow and said The West Quarter “will help us roll out the red carpet to the many tourists and visitors arriving at our capital city.”

The tower on The West Quarter’s south side is home to a dual-branded hotel, with two distinct sides. Le Meridien, The West Quarter’s higher-end hotel, has 144 rooms in green and gold colors, while the more earth-toned Element Salt Lake City Marriott offers 126 less-expensive, longer-stay guest rooms.

The West Quarter’s developers plan several additional phases on what is called Block 67, including a 16-story residential complex with 321 dwellings along with 25,000-plus square feet of ground floor space devoted to a lobby and additional retail outlets.
