Utah snow forecast: After gorgeous weather, a cold front is coming

The cold front is expected to arrive Saturday night.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Fall colors begin to transform around a statue of Brigham Young on the BYU campus on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022. A cold front is coming this weekend, and could bring snow and rain to the region.

Unseasonably warm and downright gorgeous fall weather will continue across Utah this week, but “the first taste of winter” is expected this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Things will stay warm and dry through Friday thanks to a strong area of high pressure, the weather service said. In Salt Lake City, sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s are in the forecast. (That’s about 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.) Overnight lows in the upper 40s are expected; normal lows are in the low 40s.

Salt Lake City temperatures will dip a bit into the upper 60s Saturday, and there’s a slight chance of rain on Saturday night.

That’s when “a strong cold front is expected to push across the region,” according to the weather service. And that cold front will bring “much cooler, wetter conditions across the region.”

Not only is snow possible at higher elevations, but there’s a chance of rain mixed with snow in Salt Lake City on Sunday, when the forecast high drops to about 50. That would be a dozen degrees below normal.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the low to mid-50s next week, with overnight lows in the mid-30s.

The forecast for southern Utah is similar, just several degrees warmer. In St. George, highs in the low 80s are expected through Friday, with overnight lows in the mid-50s — a few degrees above normal. The high will be about 78 on Saturday, and there’s a slight chance of rain on Saturday night.

Sunny skies will return Sunday, but it will be cooler — a high of about 68 is expected. And the forecast calls for highs in the mid-60s to about 70 degrees next week — a few degrees below normal. Overnight lows will be in the mid-40s, typical for this time of year.
