Millard County inmate dies after being found ‘alone and unresponsive’ in cell

The man’s name has not been released.

An inmate at the Millard County jail died after he was found “alone and unresponsive” in his cell early Tuesday, officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

Staff performed “life-saving efforts” on the man before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Millard County Sheriff’s Office.

Neither the man’s name nor his age has been released, and no details have been provided as to how long he had been incarcerated, or why he was booked.

The Iron/Garfield/Beaver Critical Incident Task Force is investigating the man’s death. The task force independently investigates police use of force, police shootings and in-custody deaths for Iron, Garfield and Beaver counties.

A request for additional details was not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.

On Sunday in Davis County, a jail inmate died by suicide, officials there announced. According to state data, more people died in Utah jails in 2020 than in any year since 2016, despite lower facility populations attributed to COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
