If the Utah Days of ‘47 Rodeo is going to be known as the official rodeo of the State of Utah — a moniker hung on the newly rebranded event this year — then it seems only right that a Utah cowboy should win.

And five of the state’s best bull riders, bulldoggers and bronc busters did their best to defend Utah’s honor, and win a share of the $562,500 in prize money Monday night in the Gold Standard finale at the Days of ‘47 Arena at the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City. Two of them were successful, with Cash Robb of Altonah winning the steer wrestling event and Allen Boore of Axtell prevailing in saddle bronc riding.

They are the first two Utah cowboys to win the overall at this rodeo since 2017, when it was named the Days of ‘47 Cowboy Games and Rodeo. Each earned $25,000 for his winning effort.

Dean Thompson of Altamont secured $6,000 for placing third in bareback bronc riding. Dalton Rudman of Wellington and Austin Allred of Cleveland each competed in bull riding, which finished late.

Of 288 total entries in eight events, those five were the only Utahns to make it through one of the three semifinal rodeos, held Thursday through Saturday, to Monday’s final round. In addition to the paycheck, the rodeo offered medals for just the seventh time in its history, according to the rodeo’s website. Each cowboy also won up to $1,600 during the qualifying rounds.

While no Utah rodeo athlete has won a Days of ‘47 competition in the past five years, five have taken second. However, one of them, bareback rider Kaycee Feild of Spanish Fork, has a gold medal. Feild was awarded the gold medal by the rodeo committee in 2019 after a technical scoring error resulted in him initially being named the winner before a recalculation revealed the champion to actually be Caleb Bennett of Corvallis, Montana.
