One man dead after hit-and-run crash; police investigating

The man was trying to cross West Temple in a wheelchair when he was struck, authorities said.

(Salt Lake City Police Department) A man was struck by a car and killed Saturday night as he attempted to cross West Temple in a wheelchair.

One person is dead after a hit-and-run crash on Saturday night.

According to a news release from Salt Lake City police, a man attempting to cross West Temple near 800 South in a wheelchair when he was struck by a car. Witnesses said the driver did not immediately stop, the release states, and continued southbound away from the scene.

When officers found the injured man, they performed CPR, but he died at the scene, according to the release. The victim has been identified as Martin Minteer, 65.

Later Saturday night, a man who said he was the driver of the car that hit Minteer approached officers at 700 South and West Temple, police said. No arrests have been made and the reported driver has not been charged with a crime.

Investigators are looking into the speed of the car at the time of the crash and where exactly the man in the wheelchair was when he was struck.

Saturday’s crash marks the ninth traffic-related fatality in Salt Lake City so far this year.
