According to UHP, there have been 30 wrong-way drivers reported this year.

(Utah Highway Patrol) A car traveling south on northbound Interstate 15 crashed into three other vehicles on Sunday. One person was killed.

One person was killed and four were injured in a wrong-way crash Sunday evening on Interstate 15.

It marked the second wrong-way crash that day and the 30th so far this year, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. There were 158 wrong-way drivers reported in 2021, UHP said.

Police received a report Sunday at about 7:14 p.m. of a Chrysler headed south in the northbound lanes of I-15 in North Salt Lake. According to the UHP, the Chrysler struck a motorcycle, swerved and hit a Ford, then spun around and was struck by a Kia near 2600 North.

The motorcyclist, whose name has not been released, was killed. The driver of the wrong-way car suffered critical injuries, according to the UHP.

Both northbound I-15 and northbound I-215 were closed for several hours.

Fifteen hours earlier — at about 4:18 am. Sunday — UHP received a separate report of a wrong-way driver: an SUV was traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-15 in Salt Lake City.

A UHP trooper spotted the car near 4500 South, and was able to collide with it and bring it to a stop.

Trooper Devin Hansen was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released. The wrong-way driver was treated at the scene and booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of DUI.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
