An inmate who was found dead in the Garfield County jail on Sunday is suspected to have died by suicide, authorities said Wednesday.
The man was identified as 60-year-old Albert Stout. His body will be transported from Panguitch to the state medical examiner’s office in Taylorsville, where his official cause of death will be determined.
“Our condolences go out to Mr. Stout’s family for their loss,” authorities said in a news release Wednesday.
No other details were released Wednesday afternoon. Tom Byrd, commander for the Iron/Garfield/Beaver Critical Incident Task Force, declined to provide more information. Stout’s death remains under investigation.
The Salt Lake Tribune previously reported that more than half of the 56 known deaths in Utah jails between 2014 and February 2017 — at least 31 — were suicides. In 2014, Utah had the highest rate of county inmate deaths in the nation.
