Expect warmer temperatures in northern Utah this week — after more snow

A series of storms won’t drop a lot of snow, but they should clear out an inversion.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) An inversion is seen over downtown Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019. Another inversion is expected to build on Monday, but start to clear out on Tuesday.

Following a frigid New Year’s weekend, temperatures in northern Utah are expected to reach to slightly above normal by the end of the week.

The Salt Lake City forecast calls for highs in the mid-30s through Wednesday, rising into the low 40s on Thursday and Friday. The normal high for this time of year is 38 degrees.

Along the Wasatch Front, an inversion is building, but it’s not expected to last long after a series of winter storms first bring more snow. The Utah Department of Air Quality is forecasting yellow, or “moderate,” conditions in Salt Lake, Davis and Utah counties on Tuesday.

The same day, Salt Lake City can expect about 1-2 inches of snow accumulation, with 3-7 inches possible in the mountains. On Wednesday, air quality is forecast as green, or “good,” across the state.

Salt Lake City could see another couple of inches of snow on Wednesday, followed by scattered rain and snow showers on Thursday, with little or no accumulation. There’s a slight chance of more rain and snow on Friday and Saturday.

In St. George, there’s no precipitation in the forecast through the upcoming weekend. Expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the upper 40s on Tuesday, rising to the mid-50s Wednesday through Sunday. Normal highs this time of year in St. George are in the low 50s.
