A fire was set inside the church and the building was also intentionally vandalized, police said.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Saturday afternoon after a fire and vandalism at a Latter-day Saint church in Syracuse.

According to a news release from Syracuse Police, the fire department responded to the church’s fire alarm around 1 a.m. early Saturday. The church, located at 1112 South 1525 West, was “filled with smoke,” but the building’s sprinkler system had extinguished the fire.

Crews also observed “extensive water and property damage” due to the incident, along with “several intentional acts of vandalism,” police said. The blaze and vandalism remain under investigation, but a 16-year old boy who police said was “responsible for the damage” was arrested at 2 p.m. and booked into a juvenile detention facility.
