Zion National Park closes the Narrows on Thursday to search for missing hiker

Park officials warn it will be crowded over Labor Day weekend.

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Hikers in the Narrows, Zion National Park in 2015. The Narrows are closed Thursday as Search and Rescue teams search for a missing hiker.

The popular Narrows area at Zion National Park is closed on Thursday as search and rescue personnel search for a missing hiker.

The hiker was later found with non-life threatening injuries, and was being helped out of the Narrows and Riverside Walk by rescuers. Zion officials did not say when the Narrows would reopen.

The closure comes as Zion prepares for what is expected to be a busy Labor Day weekend at the park from Friday-Monday. Visitors can expect lines and congestion, park officials warn. Those hoping to hike Angels Landing should be prepared to wait in line for several hours.

“Those with flexible plans are encouraged to visit before Friday or after Monday to avoid crowds,” according to a news release.

The park’s parking lots are usually filled by 8 a.m., so guests who arrive later should park in Springdale and walk or take the free shuttle to the pedestrian entrance walk-in gate. The shuttle is free, and masks are required.

All visitors will be required to wear face masks in Zion’s buildings, shuttle buses and crowded outdoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status.

Both campgrounds in Zion Canyon are already fully reserved for the weekend.
