Restrooms in Pioneer Park? You can weigh in here.

Potential improvements include more community events, restrooms, concessions, and activities like a splash pad and pickleball.

Salt Lake City wants to revamp Pioneer Park, and officials are looking for community feedback as they start planning.

“Pioneer Park should play an integral role in downtown Salt Lake City and the lives of the people who live, work and visit there by serving many functions that enhance the quality of urban life in our growing downtown communities,” officials wrote in a news release.

To that end, the city is asking residents to take a survey on potential activities, design improvements and new features they would like to see at Pioneer Park. The survey will be open until July 21. To take it, visit https://bit.ly/3gUTw40.

Officials on the Pioneer Park project will also be participating in several in-person events to solicit feedback from residents through July 14. They’ll be at food truck Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and at the Saturday farmers market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Improvements that officials are considering include:

  • A “comfort station,” which would feature restrooms, an information kiosk and park host station, historical signage and concessions.

  • Equipment to host more community events — meaning easier access for food trucks and farmers market vendors, as well as opportunities for local music, yoga and fitness events, and arts and cultural activities, for example.

  • Activity spaces such as fitness stations, a splash pad, pickleball, bike polo, slacklining and more.

According to the Monday news release, the goals of the park’s improvements are to “create an inclusive park that honors the layered history of Pioneer Park and the vibrant and diverse community it serves today,” to create a safe space for all ages and abilities, to encourage daily use of the park, and to mitigate climate change while embracing native ecology, among other things.

The project is scheduled to complete the concept and design phase and obtain permits in 2021, then start construction in 2022.
