Beware! Bears are on the prowl in Provo

Police have received multiple reports of black bears in the city. Here’s what to do if you see one.

Provo police are warning residents to be on the lookout for bears.

The department has received “multiple calls” this year about black bears wandering around in the city. One of them was captured on camera at 12:49 a.m. on Thursday near 900 East and Center Street.

The Utah Division Wildlife Resources “has stated that with a drought year, we may have more sightings than usual,” Provo police warned, urging residents to call them at 801-853-6210 if they do spot a bear and to “keep your distance.”

“Try to get to a secure place behind closed doors or in a vehicle,” Provo police tweeted and posted on Facebook. “Do not approach for a photo opportunity, oftentimes this will drive the bear farther into the city. Please do not feed a bear as it may bring more around.”

Police also shared this advice for anyone who encounters a bear:

• Stand your ground. Never back up, lie down or play dead. Stay calm and give the bear a chance to leave. Prepare to use your bear spray or another deterrent.

• Don’t run away or climb a tree. Black bears are excellent climbers and can run up to 35 mph — you cannot outclimb or outrun them.

• Know bear behavior. If a bear stands up, grunts, moans or makes other sounds, it’s not being aggressive. These are the ways a bear gets a better look or smell and expresses its interest.

• If a black bear attacks, always fight back. Never give up. People have successfully defended themselves with almost anything — rocks, sticks, backpacks, water bottles and even their hands and feet.
