Car registration renewal postcards will be returning to your mailbox

Utah ended the practice to cut costs, but many motorists failed to renew on time without the reminder.

Less than a year after the Utah State Tax Commission decided to save money by no longer mailing out reminders when motorists need to renew their vehicle registrations, those postcards are about to landing in mailboxes again.

The Utah Legislature voted overwhelmingly to renew the practice after data revealed that 27% of vehicle owners failed to renew registrations on time when the postcards stopped coming. The first wave of new postcards will be mailed out at the end of April for vehicles whose registrations expire in May.

If you need to update your address, you can do that at dmv.utah.gov.

However, not everyone will get a postcard. If you signed up for email notification — which the DMV is still encouraging Utahns to do — you’ll get an email reminder and not a postcard.

You can still sign up for email reminders at dmv.utah.gov, which will not only save the state the expense of mailing you a postcard but, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles, you’ll receive followup emails if you forget to renew; you receive “improved protection” of your vehicle information; and you’ll be notified even if you move and forget to notify the DMV.
