The Weber School District delayed school by two hours on Tuesday after high winds caused power outages.

The district announced it was delaying bus pickups and classes “at all locations” because of the “widespread power outages and safety precautions.” According to Rocky Mountain Power, there were 52 outages affecting 3,425 customers at 7:30 a.m. — about 400 of those customers were in the Weber District.

More than 2,700 of the affected customers were in Salt Lake County.

Many of the outages were wind-related, according to Rocky Mountain Power. The National Weather Service reported overnight wind gusts reached 69 mph in Farmington, 65 mph in Weber Canyon, 59 mph in Centerville, 55 mph in Brigham City, 52 mph at Hill Air Force Base, and 46 mph at the University of Utah.

The strong winds are expected to continue through the morning, according to the NWS, and will be strongest from Davis County north to Brigham City. The forecast calls for winds to fade Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after 7 a.m., I-15 was closed to light and high-profile vehicles between mileposts 370-371 in Box Elder County because of high winds. The Utah Department of Transportation estimated the restriction would be lifted at 10 a.m.
