Utah 7-Eleven clerk arrested for running over shoplifter with his car

A Salt Lake City convenience store clerk was arrested after he ran over an alleged shoplifter with his car.

According to a probable cause statement, the 60-year-old 7-Eleven clerk attempted to stop the unidentified shoplifter, who fled the store on foot. The clerk got in his car and pursued the shoplifter in an attempt to “detain him for police.”

However, the clerk “struck … the suspect/victim with his vehicle, driving over his legs.” The clerk then crashed his car into a nearby home, causing “severe structural damage," drove off and called 911.

When contacted by police, the clerk was placed under arrest and booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident, pending formal charges.

Police did not specify at which 7-Eleven location — there are 41 in Salt Lake City — the man worked.
