Bountiful police shoot armed man to death outside Viewmont High

A “heavily armed” man was shot to death by Bountiful police outside Viewmont High School on Tuesday night.

Bountiful Police Lt. Dave Edwards said officers were called to the school, at 120 W. 1000 North, about 10:30 p.m. and found a 27-year-old man armed with a shotgun, a knife and a bow and arrow outside. The man and three police officers all fired their weapons, Edwards said, and the man was killed. No officers were injured.

The name of the dead man, who was a Bountiful resident, has not been released. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting is under investigation. According to police, the man asked officers to shoot him and then pointed his shotgun at them. There is body camera footage of the shooting, but police did not say when that will be released.

Edwards said the three officers who fired their weapons were placed on paid leave. The department, he added, will sit down with investigators on Wednesday to “determine the why of all of this.”

“We haven’t looked at the circumstances yet,” he said.

Several of the school’s windows were shattered by gunfire. Viewmont High School delayed opening by two hours on Wednesday.
