Sandy Smith’s closed following ‘suspicious’ fire in trailer filled with fireworks

An early morning fire at the loading dock has forced a Smith’s Food and Drug store to close temporarily.

The Sandy Fire Department arrived at the store, at 2039 E. 9400 South, just after 1 a.m. Thursday, FOX 13 reported.

The fire burned in a trailer filled with fireworks that was parked at the loading dock. The fireworks were exploding when the first crews arrived on the scene.

“There’s a lot of unknown,” Deputy Chief Ryan McConaghie with Sandy Fire told FOX 13. “The trailer itself is significantly damaged, but, fortunately, nobody was injured and we did have help from the sprinkler system here at the Smith’s building here to extinguish the blaze.”

The store opened by 8:30 a.m. The cause of the fire, which officials are calling “suspicious,” is being investigated.
