A wildfire in Box Elder County has scarred an estimated 988 acres and was still growing Sunday, according to authorities.

Dubbed the Messix Fire, referring to Messix Peak, which is the high point of the Promontory Mountain Range, the blaze remained under investigation.

Per Utah Fire Info, crews began responding to the fire early Sunday morning. It threatened five to six structures Sunday evening in the old town of Promontory, roughly 70 miles northwest of Salt Lake City. It was 15% contained on Sunday night.

“Dozers are close to completing a control line between the fire and those structures, which will greatly reduce the threat,” Utah Fire Info tweeted Sunday evening.
