Tennessee man drowns in Deer Creek State Park

A 71-year-old Tennessee man drowned Wednesday at Deer Creek State Park.

Daniel Thompson, from Newport, Tenn., was boating with family and friends between Wallsbury Bay and the Rainbow Cove area at Deer Creek State Park on Wednesday afternoon when his hat fell into the water, according to the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation. Thompson, who was not wearing a life jacket, jumped in to retrieve it, but he was unable to keep his head above water.

After a member of Thompson's group jumped in to help, but was unsuccessful, others called 911.

A Utah State Parks ranger responded to the area and started the search for Thompson.

About 8:30 p.m., the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team located Thompson’s body, which was resting in 111 feet of water, approximately 300 feet from shore.
