An Arizona man fell to his death from a cliff overlooking Lake Powell, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Ian Brisbin, 26, fell about 70 feet from Alstrom Point, which is in a remote area of Kane County that overlooks Gunsight and Padre bays, sometime early Thursday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, Brisbin and a friend — both from the Page, Ariz., area — were camping near Alstrom Point on Wednesday night. The friend told police he had gone to bed sometime after midnight, but Brisbin “stayed up to watch the stars.”

When the friend awoke Thursday morning, he was unable to locate Brisbin. The friend eventually looked over the cliff, saw some of Brisbin’s belongings and called police. A deputy arrived, determined that Brisbin had been killed and called in personnel from the Kane County sheriff’s search and rescue team and the National Park Service to retrieve his body.

According to the sheriff’s office, the death “appears to be an accident." Brisbin’s body was taken to the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office for “further investigation.”
