3-year-old Utah boy shoots himself in the head; police are investigating

A 3-year-old Utah boy is expected to live after he was shot at his home early Thursday morning.

According to Murray police, the shooting happened about 6:30 a.m. at a home near 5200 South and 800 East. Police believe the child woke up before other members of his family, climbed up on a counter and retrieved the gun; and accidentally shot himself in the head.

The child was taken to Intermountain Medical in Murray by a family member, then flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

“We’ve been told that his wound is not life threatening,” said Murray police spokesman Kenny Bass.

The gun belonged to someone in the home, according to police, who are investigating the shooting.

“It was reported as accidental,” Bass said. “We’re not labeling it as anything yet.”
