Behind the Headlines: Homeless pedestrian deaths, a father-son homeless outreach, and the decade in Utah health

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Ten-year-old Chase Hansen and his father John who have an organization called Project Empathy, meet Chris Coons in downtown Salt Lake City on Monday, Dec. 16, 2019, as Chase interviews Coons about his life. The two of them spend time with people experiencing homelessness in an effort to connect with people on a personal level. On this occasion Chase learns that Coons used to be an electrician before losing much of his vision and how he loved to ski.

In this week’s episode of Behind the Headlines, we look at how pedestrian deaths near the new South Salt Lake homeless center spark calls for safety improvements, a father-son team working to make a difference in the lives of people who are homeless, by listening, and the Utah health trends that defined that past decade. Also, we tackle Robert Gehrke’s column prognosticating what 2020 will look like for Utah politics.
