Sundance and Deer Valley each named as America’s top ski resort

(Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune) Sundance Mountain Resort partnered with Follow the Flag to ski a giant American Flag down Bearclaw run in 2018.

Sundance is not just the best ski resort in Utah, it’s the best ski resort in North America, according to Condé Nast readers.

That comes just days after Deer Valley Resort — No. 4 on the Condé Nast list — was named the top ski resort in the United States at the World Ski Awards in Austria, for the seventh year in a row. (The Stein Eriksen Lodge at Deer Valley was named the best U.S. ski hotel at the awards.)

According to Condé Nast, a “record 600,000 registered voters weighed in” for its 32nd annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Not only was Sundance Mountain Resort their favorite, but three of the top five, and five of the top 18, are in Utah.

At Sundance, "steep bowls give experienced skiers a thrill, while a third of the runs are green and beginner-friendly,” Condé Nast gushed. “The 5,000 acres of protected wilderness that surround the 450-acre resort will help you seek solitude and make you feel totally removed from the rest of the world.”

(Chris Detrick | The Salt Lake Tribune) USA's Jaelin Kauf (1) competes in the Ladies' Mogul Finals during the FIS Visa Freestyle International Ski World Cup at Deer Valley Resort Thursday, January 11, 2018. Kauf finished in first place with a score of 81.37.

And skiers who are film fans can “nerd out” over the Sundance Film Festival, according to the magazine, which is apparently unaware that the film festival takes place primarily in Park City (with some screenings at the Sundance resort).

Sundance is one of five Utah ski resorts to make the list:

• No. 4 Deer Valley is “made for families who love to ski together (it’s one of only three resorts in the country that still bans snowboarding) and are willing to spend top dollar for the experience."

• What No. 5 Snowbasin “lacks in base area amenities, it more than makes up for in terrain.”

• No. 16 Power Mountain has "more skiable acreage than any ski resort in the U.S. and an average snowfall of more than 500 inches a year.”

• And No. 18 Park City Mountain Resort “continues to be rated one of our readers’ favorites thanks to its varied terrain and buzzy downtown for top-notch après-ski.”
