High winds, and maybe snow, are in Utah’s forecast

(Courtesy National Weather Service) There's a high wind warning for much of Utah on Wednesday into Thursday.

Utahns can expect Wednesday’s high winds across much of the state to continue into Thursday — along with cold temperatures and, perhaps, a bit of snow in some areas.

The National Weather Service issued a strong wind advisory for parts of north-central Utah west of the Wasatch Front, with winds of 20-30 mph and gusts of 50 mph. In Dixie, especially near the canyons, winds of 20-30 mph and gusts of 50-55 mph are expected.

Southeast Utah will see winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of 45-50 mph.

The strongest warning is for the area around Price and south of there, where winds of 25-35 mph and gusts of up to 65 mph were expected Wednesday evening.

After a mild start on Wednesday, temperatures in the Salt Lake area dipped into the 40s by later afternoon. There’s a 70% chance of snow showers overnight into early Thursday, as temperatures fall to a low of about 27. Accumulation of half an inch or less is expected, although there could be more in some areas because of lake-effect snow.

A hard freeze warning also is in effect for much of the Wasatch Front.

Thursday will be clear and cold, with a high of just 39 and an overnight low of 24. There’s no further precipitation in the forecast through Tuesday, with temperatures rising from the upper 40s Friday to the upper 50s on Saturday and the low- to mid-60s Sunday through Tuesday.
