Big grass fire shuts down I-80 near the airport

A large grass fire near Salt Lake International Airport restricted traffic on Interstate 80 on Tuesday.

The fire, between 4000 West and 5600 West, included several spot fires beside the freeway, according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department. The blazes were pouring out black smoke, and the reduced visibility forced closure of I-80 west of the airport.

Westbound lanes on I-80 reopened shortly before noon; eastbound lanes reopened about 1 p.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
