Lightning started 31 fires in Box Elder County on Sunday; 7 remain uncontained

Firefighters worked quickly to knock down 24 wildfires in Box Elder County that were ignited by a lightning storm Sunday night, leaving another seven that were burning uncontained on Tuesday morning, according to county and state representatives.
Among the remaining fires are the 5,590-acre Russell fire, which is threatening a natural gas pipeline, and the 4,332-acre Curlew Flat fire. Both of those were listed as 30% contained Tuesday morning.
Monday’s efforts included firefighters from state, federal and local agencies, and 12 fire engines remain assigned to the ongoing containment. A total of 31 fires were found burning in the county after an evening lightning storm passed through northwest Utah Sunday night.
