Body of 21-year-old West Valley City man recovered from Provo Canyon dam

A 21-year-old West Valley City man drowned Saturday after he jumped from a bridge into a dam in Provo Canyon.

Albert “AJ” Mapa was last seen Saturday afternoon, Utah County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Spencer Cannon said. A search and rescue crew found his body just before 9 p.m., about 35 feet downriver from where he was last seen at the Olmstead Diversion Dam, which is located on the Provo River.

Mapa had recently returned home from a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mission in Tonga, Cannon said.
