Fire breaks out in Layton apartment building

A building in a Layton apartment complex caught fire Monday, leading to five people suffering minor injuries.

The fire started in a first-floor unit of the Layton Meadows Apartments, in building 586, at the corner of 1425 North and 600 West in Layton, said Layton Fire Chief Kevin Ward.

A Layton fire crew was answering an alarm at the Layton Hills Mall, just to the south of the apartment complex, when one of the engineers saw smoke at 2:26 p.m., Ward said.

Ultimately, the fire prompted three alarms, Ward said, as fresh firefighters were swapped in for the first crews, who had to rest because of the hot weather. Some 60 firefighters worked on the blaze, Ward said.

Five people received minor injuries; two were taken to a nearby hospital, and the other three were treated at the scene, Ward said. Most of the injuries were burns and smoke inhalation, though Ward heard one report that a resident jumped out of a second-story window to escape the 24-unit building.

Seven Layton police officers suffered smoke inhalation while evacuating residents, Ward said. They were treated at a nearby hospital.

By evening, the fire was mostly out, Ward said, though crews were still going through the building to put out hot spots. The fire did not spread to other buildings.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, though Ward said it appears the cause was a cooking mishap.

The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.
