A ‘casual’ memorial is set for Sunday for retired Utah Supreme Court Justice Ronald E. Nehring, who died in May

Friends, family and colleagues of retired Utah Supreme Court Justice Ronald E. Nehring will gather Sunday to share stories about the longtime jurist who died in May at the age of 71.

An open house in honor of Nehring is set for Sunday at the Orangerie at Red Butte Garden, 300 Wakara Way, on the University of Utah campus.

Nehring’s family is billing the open house as “a casual affair to celebrate Ron and a life well lived.”

Nehring, who served on Utah’s highest court from 2003 to 2014, died May 24 from complications connected to anti-cancer radiation treatments he received years earlier.

At the time, retired Chief Justice Christine Durham called Nehring “a very engaging colleague” who “cared about other people.” The current chief justice, Matthew Durrant, called Nehring “a judge’s judge” with “a rock-solid commitment to justice.”

The open house will start at 10 a.m. Speeches and sharing of “great Ron stories” is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to noon, followed by “general mingling” and walking around the gardens from noon to 2 p.m.

Refreshments will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission to the garden will be waived for guests of Nehring’s memorial.
