A 19-year-old Draper man who allegedly intentionally ran down an 11-year-old girl with his car has been charged with attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony.

On May 31, Steven Becky drove his car into the girl as she walked an electric scooter by the side of the road near 15050 S. Winged Bluff Lane. According to charging documents, Becky took “a sharp right turn toward” the girl, who was walking an electric scooter. Surveillance video “clearly showed the vehicle veer from the left side of the road directly at, and then into, the victim.”

According to a witness, Becky then got out of his overturned car, “charged” at the girl, and told her, “We all have to die sometime.” Becky later told police he hit the girl “because she is white.” She suffered serious injuries, including a fractured hip and head injuries.

According to a probable cause statement, Becky’s behavior was “erratic” when police arrived, and he admitted he had used Xanax and marijuana. He later told doctors at Intermountain Medical Center, where he was taken to treat his injuries, that he had used LSD and mushrooms.

In addition to attempted murder, Becky was charged in Fourth District Court with operating a vehicle negligently causing injury, a second-degree felony, and three drug charges — possession with the intent to distribute, a third-degree felony; and both possession or use of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, Class-B misdemeanors. He’s being held in the Utah County Jail; his bail was set at $255,000.
