A 14-year-old has been charged with manslaughter fatally shooting his friend

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of his 15-year-old friend.

West Valley City Police confirmed that the 14-year-old, who was not named because of his age, was charged in 3rd District Juvenile Court on Tuesday.

Marquez Grajeda was shot at close range on Feb. 4 at 12:45 p.m. at a home at 1347 W. 2320 South. Both the Grajeda and the 14-year-old were on a lunch break from school at the time, according to police. The 14-year-old told police that he pointed the gun toward the victim and pulled the trigger, but that the shooting was an accident.

A manslaughter charge can be filed if someone recklessly causes a death.
