Medical cannabis is now legal in the state of Utah, but transporting 149 pounds of marijuana in the back of your vehicle is still against the law — as Heber City Police were quick to point out after a Tuesday traffic stop.

Sean Daniel Herbert, 51, was booked into the Wasatch County Jail for investigation of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, a second-degree felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class-B misdemeanor.

According to a probable cause statement, police stopped the car at 550 E. 600 South in Heber at 4:35 p.m. on Tuesday because a check of registration information showed there was no proof of insurance. During the traffic stop, the officer obtained a search warrant for the vehicle from 4th District Court — and located 149 pounds of marijuana that was “packaged in 80 different packages varying in weight from 2.2 pounds to one pound.”

According to police, the marijuana has an estimated street value of $500,000.
