Fox News apologizes after implicating U.S. senator in the slaying of University of Utah student
(Photo: Fox News Channel screen grab) Instead of displaying a mugshot of Melvin S. Rowland, the Fox New Channel ran photos of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in its report on the murder of University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey.
The Fox News Channel was forced to apologize for its report on the slaying of University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey, which incorrectly identified the suspected killer as a United States senator.
As anchorwoman Jillian Mele told viewers that “the suspect, Melvin Rowland, was found dead after shooting himself,” not one but two different pictures of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) were displayed onscreen, with text reading “suspect dead after killing student on campus.”
Some 45 minutes later, Mele admitted, “We showed you the wrong video.... We apologize for that error.”
The error and the apology were captured and tweeted by John Whitehouse of Media Matters for America.
