Utah wildfires continue to grow; Airbnb opens homes for evacuees

( Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune ) Helicopters refill with water from H.E. Davis pond in Woodland Hills to fight the Pole Creek and Bald Mountain fires. The fires have displaced approximately 6,000 people living in the Woodland Hills, Elk Ridge and Covered Bridge communities.

Two wildfires burning in Utah County have surpassed a combined 90,000 acres as firefighters prepare for more windy days.

The Pole Creek Fire was measured at 74,509 acres on Tuesday morning. The nearby Bald Mountain Fire is 15,635 acres.

A tweet from the National Weather Service warned that a cold front is bringing breezy and dry weather for Tuesday and Wednesday. That will create hazardous firefighting conditions, the Weather Service said.

About 6,000 people remain evacuated in the southern half of Utah County near the junction of U.S. highways 6 and 89.

The online lodging broker Airbnb on Tuesday announced it was helping evacuees find places to stay through what it calls the Open Homes Program. Evacuees can go to airbnb.com/welcome/evacuees/utahwildfires to find rooms that are being offered for free. Anyone wanting to offer homes can go to the site, too, and post their information.

It’s not clear whether more lodging is needed. The American Red Cross had earlier offered shelters to evacuees at Salem Hills High School, but no one sought to stay there.
