FBI alerts Saratoga Springs school of social media threat

(Al Hartmann | Tribune file photo) About 80 students at Westlake High School in Saratoga Springs left class and stood together in silence at the front entrance of the school Wednesday, March 14, 2018, to remember the 17 students who died in a school shooting in Florida. They held posters of the names of those killed.

Saratoga Springs officials say they were able to thwart a social media threat related to Westlake High School that was discovered by the FBI.

Principal Gary Twitchell said in a letter sent to parents on Saturday afternoon that the FBI alerted the Saratoga Springs Police Department to the threat. The Daily Herald reports the letter stated that law enforcement identified and located the individual and appropriate action was taken. Twitchell said in the letter that the posting did not specify how or where the threat would take place, just made general intentions of hurting classmates.

The school increased security for a homecoming dance it hosted Saturday evening.
