New sculpture made from 6 tons of willow branches taking shape at Utah State University

Logan • A library at Utah State University will soon have a new sculpture made out of 6 tons of willow branches.
The Herald Journal newspaper reports that the sculpture is being constructed at Merrill-Cazier Library over the course of several weeks, with the help of people in Logan.
Sculptor Patrick Dougherty of Chapel Hill, N.C., has made more than 250 sculptures in locations around the world, often using sticks as raw material. He says he hopes people walk into the sculpture and feel something that excites their imaginations. It’s designed to last two years, as long as the materials hold up.
Arts college dean Craig Jessop says he’s long admired Dougherty’s work, and the sculpture will be the grand finale of Utah State’s year of the arts.
