Man arrested for allegedly stealing car with 2 girls in the back seat

Police have made an arrest in a Sunday carjacking that turned into a kidnapping.

Charles Brandon Peterson, 39, has been arrested and, according to Unified Police, faces charges of kidnapping and car theft. He has been returned to the Utah State Prison for a violation of his parole.

The incident began Sunday afternoon at a gas station at 335 W. 7200 South in Midvale when the car’s driver went inside, leaving her 13-year-old and 4-month-old daughters in the back seat and the keys in the ignition. The man jumped in the driver’s seat, started the car and drove away — apparently unaware the girls were in the back seat.

But 13-year-old Josslyn Milliam quickly made him aware.

“I was hitting him as hard as I could,” Milliam told FOX 13. “I was hitting him in the side of head, the neck and in the face.”

The man pulled over near 6900 S. State St. and abandoned the car. The girls were uninjured.
