Weekend road work will complicate travel near Salt Lake City International Airport

Al Hartmann | The Salt Lake Tribune With 150 road projects for 2016 UDOT is encouraging safe driving around construction areas. Cars go by at over 70 mph near road construction between 12300 South and Bangerter Highway exits on I-15 Tuesday April 12. Often orange barrels or a concrete barrier is the only thing protecting road workers from traffic passing by only 3 feet away.

Interstate 80 lane and ramp closures will complicate travel near Salt Lake City International Airport this weekend. And other lane closures in Layton, Draper and Little Cottonwood Canyon are also expected to create delays.

Eastbound I-80 is scheduled to be reduced to one lane between Bangerter Highway and I-215 from Friday at 8 p.m. until Sunday at 8 p.m.

Also during that time, the on-ramp from the airport to eastbound I-80 will be closed, as will the on-ramp from northbound Bangerter Highway to eastbound I-80.

The Utah Department of Transportation says many drivers leaving the airport will need to use alternate routes, such as southbound Bangerter Highway to State Road 201. Also, it is warning drivers to plan for congestion and moderate delays on eastbound I-80.

The closures will allow maintenance work on the eastbound I-80 bridge over the Jordan River Surplus Canal.

UDOT also warns about delays from other restrictions over the coming week:

I-15 in Draper • The freeway will be reduced to three lanes in each direction between 12300 South and 14600 South from Saturday at 10 p.m. to Sunday at 8 a.m. Crews will be repairing pavement along the stretch.

I-15 in Layton • Continuing recent daily closures, up to two lanes in each direction will be closed from Antelope Drive to Hill Field Road each night beginning as early as 7 p.m. All lanes are scheduled to open for the morning commute.

Closures are scheduled to continue through June 22 as crews work on a new Layton Crossing bridge.

Little Cottonwood Canyon • Sections of the road will be reduced to one lane with flaggers controlling traffic for a paving project that is scheduled to begin Monday. Restrictions will be in effect Mondays through Thursdays through the early fall as crews repave the entire length of the canyon.
